MAZE’s exploration into the diverse possibilities presented by media scores has strengthened our belief that this area remains ripe for further investigation. Particularly compelling is how the fundamental function of the score has been reimagined, transforming into a score equipped with ears, eyes, and a mouth. This evolution partly lifts the veil between audience and performers, creating a shared informational space. MAZE is keenly interested in advancing these concepts, whether by employing computer-generated audio and visual inputs to influence parameters for self-generating scores or by extending the principles of networked composition to redefine how music is mediated within the performance environment.
Throughout the last 10 years MAZE has developed a repertoire of pieces that can be defined as media scores, what we call “a framework that extends the musical score beyond traditional notation, not only using musical principles to structure other media but also allowing other media and non-musical elements to shape the composition”. Some of these pieces have been developed by members of MAZE, Anne La Berge and Yannis Kyriakides, as well as through collaboration with colleagues who have produced remarkable works in this vein.
Some of this repertoire includes:
- Andrius Arutiunian: I Track You Sometimes
- Justin Bennet: Blueprint
- Anne La Berge: RAW
- Alessandro Bossetti: Renard
- Marco Ciciliani: Kilgore
- Cat Hope: The Rupture Exists
- Cat Hope: 9 Options
- David Kanaga: Oikospel
- Yannis Kyriakides: Karaoke Etudes
- Yannis Kyriakides: Oneiricon
- Yannis Kyriakides: Orbital
- Yannis Kyriakides: Trench Code
- Yael Levi: Ink
- Alexander Schubert: Silent Post
- Elliot Sharp: Foliage
An essay by Yannis Kyriakides that describes the qualities of this kind of composition and talks about some of the repertoire that MAZE has promoted can be found here…
